Clinton: Syria at "turning point"

Amateur video out of Syria appears to show the continued bombardment of Homs.

The video, which could not be independently verified by Reuters comes one week after a truce was declared in Syria.

While the truce appears to hold in parts of the country, rebel strongholds reportedly continue to come under pressure

In Brussels U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the truce is Syria's President Bashar al-Assad's last chance.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. SECRETARY HILLARY CLINTON SAYING:

"We are at a crucial turning point, either we succeed in pushing forward with Kofi Annan's plan in accordance with the security council direction, with the help of monitors, steadily broadening and deepening a zone of non-conflict and peace, or we see Assad's squandering his last chance before additional measures have to be considered. Now we will continue to increase the pressure on Assad."

On the ground in Syria UN monitors say they need time to build trust according to Colonel Ahmed Himmiche.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.N. COLONEL AHMAD HIMMICHE, HEAD OF THE INITIAL U.N. TEAM, SAYING:

"We need time, we need trust, we need to build confidence and trust within all the parties in order to achieve our task."

Amateur video showed monitors swarmed by crowds as they headed into a Damascus suburb.

The UN estimates that more than 9,000 people have been killed in Syria since the uprising began a year ago. The government blames the the violence on foreign backed insurgent groups.
