'Cleansing' The Dances

What we know as the classical dances today is a culmination of a movement started by the British in the 1800s. It was a cultural genocide that was carried out against the Devadasis and their dances, in order to create an art that agreed with their idea of a secular, reformed, ‘ideal’ India.
