The movement is known as Occupy Central with Love and Peace.

Supporters are trying to pressure Beijing into granting full democracy in the former British colony.

But officials from both Hong Kong and China had warned them that such demonstrations were illegal.

Last month, Beijing rejected demands for people in Hong Kong to freely choose the city's next leader.

Both sides have vowed to hold their ground.
