ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION).

STORY: Thousands of Chilean students marched through Santiago on Thursday to press demands for wide ranging education reforms, one month before a presidential election.

The march - organized by Chile's Confederation of Students (CONFECH) and secondary school students - was largely peaceful, but clashes erupted as hooded protesters confronted police in the center of Santiago.

Police used tear gas and water cannon to drive back the protesters.

With a presidential election set for November 17, 2013, reform of the education system is expected to be a major challenge for Chile's prospective new leader.

The powerful student movement has been pressing for a radical overhaul of the education system for the past two years.
