Description
A shift in the right direction, especially, among all the EU’s institutions, for the EP. Two years before elections, a Eurobarometer survey found that even in crisis, half of Europe’s citizens believe EU membership is a good thing, up 3% on the last poll. Many say participating in parliamentary elections is the best way to voice concerns. Most however feel their voice counts for too little, even though Parliament best represents the EU. The vast majority agree that jobs should be the key priority for Europe’s politicians. Citizens feel that sense of unity in the EU is important, especially in difficult times, and that’s something we should shape further. But we should also demonstrate our ability to act, that we aren't hesitating in the crisis. The European Single Market, the heart of the EU, may have been functioning for decades. But according to MEPs, there’s plenty left to complete to fulfil the needs, demands and rights of consumers. That means well-informed consumers, consumers having better products, better quality, better durability. Bad news from the European Court of Justice for MEPs calling for reform of the Strasbourg plenary calendar, by squeezing two sessions into one week to accommodate the plenary missed in the summer break. In a recommendation, the Advocate General says it’s against EU Treaties. A final judgment is expected later this year. It sends a message to the opponents of the sessions and seat of the EP in France. Why don’t we squeeze both sessions into one week. That way we will fulfil our obligations to the treaty but also achieve welcome savings.
