Once a promising boxer, Jim Braddock has no other alternative but to quit competition after a series of defeats. With America sinking into the Great Depression, Jim accepts any little job to support his wife Mae and their kids. He never however loses the hope of one day getting back in the ring. Thanks to a last-minute no-show, Jim is summoned to fight the number two contender in the world, and surprising everyone, wins in the third round.
