Li Wangyang (wong-young), a Chinese labour activist was found dead in a hospital ward in central China Wednesday and his family are crying foul.

Li was found by his sister and brother-in-law with a bandage around his neck. Hospital officials say he committed suicide. But a photo that Li's family took show his two feet planted firmly on the ground.

On Thursday, demonstrators gathered in Hong Kong to demand an investigation. Supporters say Li's death was the result of an interview he gave last month in which he was critical of the Chinese government.

Li had been a labour activist whose advocacy of workers' rights during the 1989 pro-democracy protests landed him in jail for 22 years on charges of counter-revolutionary propaganda and incitement.
