China’s EV Market
Description
After a decade of rapid growth, global EVs hit the 10 million mark in 2020. China, with 4.5 million electric cars, has the largest fleet. However, the Chinese government believes that China has too many EV makers and will encourage consolidation, Industry and Information Technology Minister Xiao Yaqing said today. The government’s promotion of greener vehicles to cut pollution has prompted electric car makers such as Nio ($NIO@China), XPeng ($XPEV@China), and BYD ($BYDDY@China) to expand their manufacturing capacity in China. However, these plans have been affected by semiconductor chip supply chain issues. Xiao said the ministry was speeding up alternative solutions to address an auto chip supply shortage. China’s market regulator last week fined three auto chip sales companies for driving up prices in a move to help auto production in the world’s biggest vehicle market.
