Description

China sends its latest satellite into space aimed at ending dependence on U.S. navigation satellites.

As the fifth out of 35 orbiters, the global positioning satellite will be part of a system codenamed "COMPASS."

According to state media, the system will provide real-time navigation and positioning information for the Asia-Pacific region by 2012.

China began moves to shake off U.S. dominance in this market by launching test satellites in 2000.

The eventual goal is to provide global navigation services by 2020.

The GPS satellites are seen in China as crucial for the transport and oil exploration industries, as well as weather and disaster forecasting.
