China custody death protests
Description
The death in custody of a villager accused of helping to organise anti-land grab protests in southern China has unleashed a wave of protests.
The protesters believe the man was a victim of police brutality, which the government denies.
This amateur video purportedly shows hundreds on the march in Wukan village on Thursday.
The video, shot on a mobile phone, also showed scenes from another rally a day earlier.
Reuters hasn't been able to independently verify the accuracy of the material.
The protests are the latest in an outburst of simmering discontent in rural areas that's eroding the Communist Party's grip at the grass roots.
In Hong Kong a small group of demonstrators gathered outside government offices to show their support for the villagers.
SOUNDBITE: Lee Cheuk-Yan, legislative council member, saying (English):
"All over China the villagers and the people are very angry with land grab and corruption so it shows that the system is not responding to the need of the people and the system is using only repression to respond. And we don't believe that repression is the way out. It will only trigger more protest and anger from the people."
The real worry for the Beijing government is not the numbers involved in the protests but their tendency to become more persistent and organised.
Both are features of the unrest in Guangdong province.
