Chile: Pinochet Ordered Killing on U.S. Soil

The Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet did order the assassination of a Chilean diplomat in Washington D.C. in 1976. According to recently declassified intelligence, Orlando Letelier was killed by a car bomb after imprisonment and torture prompted him to flee to the United States. The diplomat’s son, Senator Juan Pablo Letelier also discovered a memo from then Secretary of State George Schultz to President Ronald Reagan revealing their knowledge of the attack. The Chilean senator expressed his hopes that this revelation will be another step towards uncovering the truth about what happened 40 years ago. teleSUR
