Hundreds turned out on the streets of Santiago for the funeral of Daniel Zamudio.

The death of the 24-year-old gay man after a suspected homophobic attack has shocked many Chileans.

He was beaten up by a gang who carved swastikas into his flesh.

He died from his injuries 25 days later.

His family and friends were joined by supporters and rights activists to pay a final farewell on Friday.

Zamudio's brother Diego said the family was grateful for the solidarity people have shown since the attack.

SOUNDBITE: DIEGO ZAMUDIO, BROTHER OF DANIEL, SAYING (Spanish):

"It is a moment of calm, a celebration for my brother. There will be time to seek justice. I just ask for respect and thank you from my heart, on behalf of my whole family. We thank you for every hand that greets us, for every gesture, for every tear you shed for my brother."

Later the same day almost 1, 000 people marched on Santiago's Italia Plaza to demand justice.

The killing has unleashed a national debate and calls for the passing of anti-discrimination laws

Four suspects have been arrested and face charges of aggravated murder following Zamudio's death.
