Chile: Discussions on New Constitution to Begin

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has announced that discussions will begin on a new Constitution to replace the current document that dates from the August Pinochet dictatorship. “It does not address the needs of our times nor does it favor democracy,” said Bachelet, as she took an important step towards fulfilling a campaign promise. The president’s term of office will have expired when the Constitution is adopted in March of next year. teleSUR
