Chile Creates Easter Island Maritime Reserve

Chile has declared a huge new maritime reserve around Easter Island off the country’s East Coast in the Pacific Ocean. The 631, 000 square-kilometer sanctuary is a spawning ground and source of food for tuna, shark, marlin and swordfish, which, in turn, are a food source for the RapaNui people who live in the island. It joins reserves declared by the United States, Britain and New Zealand off the US Pacific Islands, Pitcairn and the Kermadecs, as areas protected from the depredations of unregulated fishing. teleSUR
