Charles M. Moore - The Rose

I saw a woman today
though she didn't see me
she just sat on a bench
neath a big oak tree
with the park all around
yet there wasn't a sound
her eyes they just gazed
at one spot on the ground

As I approach'ed her I saw
there was a tear on her cheek
I don't know if she saw me
but she didn't speak
it was the silence we heard
no bird songs in the air
there wasn't a sound
as she gazed at the ground

It was getting quite cold
as I sat down next to her
though she didn't turn round
no she wasn't aware
of my presence at all
her eyes only glared
at the spot on the ground
with the silence around

Then I was gently amazed
to see a tear on her cheek
roll off the laughter lines
just below her eye
and she still didn't speak
she just walked away
not a word did she say

There was a rose on the ground
where the woman gazed
and as I saw it I thought
there goes a woman in love
but the rose it was broken
and the petals were crushed
so I sat neath the tree
as I gazed at the rose
and wondered who it belonged too
will I ever know

Still there wasn't a sound
as I sat on the seat
then I noticed a tear
running down my cheek
as I gazed at the rose
their's no getting away
you will never grow into
a flower again

Shattered rose on the ground
like a lost love of mine
it brought memories of
shattered rose on the ground
oh the rose on the ground.
