Description

Britain's Prince Charles and his wife Camilla were given a spectacular traditional Maori welcome when they visited the Turangawaewae Marae on Sunday, as they continued their tour of New Zealand.

The royal couple wore Maori cloaks as they watched bare-chested warriors perform the haka -a traditional Maori war cry - during the ceremonial powhiri involving singing and dancing.

Charles addressed the crowd in Maori as he thanked his hosts - Kiingi Tuheitia, seen as a unifying leader of New Zealand's Maori people, and other Maori elders - for the welcome.

The royal couple also viewed a parade of warriors in canoes, waka taua, on the Waikato river.

Charles and Camilla will spend the rest of Sunday in Auckland on day 5 of their 12-day tour of New Zealand and Australia.

They last visited New Zealand and Australia in 2012, as part of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee Tour.
