(SOUNDBITE) (English) MONA LISA TATUM, CAYMAN 27 TV, SAYING:

"Premier McKeeva Bush has been arrested in connection with a number of ongoing police investigations. Officers from the RCIPS Financial Crime Unit arrested Mr. Bush at around 7 this morning at his West Bay home. The RCIPS confirms the premier is still detained in police custody but are not confirming where he is being held."

Bush, seen here, was arrested on suspicion of theft and the alleged misuse of a government credit card.

Other charges include abuse of office and breach of trust, stemming from the alleged importation of explosive substances without valid permits.

The Cayman Islands is a British Overseas Territory with an elected parliament and premier but a British-appointed governor oversees external affairs and security, including the police force.
