Category 4 hurricane Erick makes landfall

Hurricane Erick, now a powerful Category 4 storm, made landfall early Thursday on Mexico's southwest Pacific coast, with sustained winds of 230 km/h (143 mph) and gusts up to 275 km/h (171 mph). The storm threatens catastrophic wind damage, flash flooding and potentially deadly storm surge in coastal and inland regions.
