Catalan leader urges calm opposition

The disputed Catalan president, dismissed on Friday by Spain’s central government, has refused to recognise the sacking of the regional government of Catalonia.

In a televised message broadcast on Saturday (October 28), Carles Puigdemont called for calm and democratic opposition to the imposition of direct rule by Madrid.

Puigdemont called on Catalans to have “patience, perseverance and perspective, for we know very well that the best way to defend the conquests won so far is is a democratic opposition to the application of Article 155.”

He also called on pro-independence Catalans to be respectful of their fellow Catalans who are in favor of the region remaining within Spain.
