Caravan - Muggsy Spanier 1954
Description
Created in 1937 by Duke Ellington and originally performed by his trombonist Juan Tizol . Muggsy and his men created a Ellingtonian impression without copying Duke’s methods of the the bowing of the frontline musicians.
This has been one of my favourite records of Muggsy Spanier. A recording session during a performance in a Chicago nightclub in 1954.
Muggsy had surrounded himself with some of the very best musicians in the style. I mention Earl Fatha Hines on piano, Jimmy Archey trombone, Darnell Howard clarinet, Pops Foster bass and Earl Watkins drums.
