Caltech scientists create these gross, see-through mice in just two weeks

The first successful attempt to perform whole body clearing in mice was published in the the journal Cell on July 31.

This method, developed by a California Institute of Technology research team headed by Viviana Gradinaru, opens up a new approach to study physiology, disease and long-range cellular interactions that require intact body models.

After the mouse is skinned, a lipid-dissolving hydrogel is perfused in the bloodstream. Using a pump, the detergent and other clearing agents are distributed to the entire body.

The process clarifies the kidney, heart, lungs and intestines in two to three days, and clears out the brain and the rest of the body in two weeks. This produces a transparent three-dimensional map of the organs in the body.

The group is now using this method to map out the nervous system, tracing out where nerves extend in various neurological diseases.
