Calm returns to Tahrir after dawn raid

Early in the morning, state security forces attacked demonstrators gathered around the square.

"State security forces chased us with batons and live ammunition all the way to the square, from dawn until around 7 in the morning. God only knows what will happen today, they've already dispersed us here. All that is left is for them to attack is Omar Makram Mosque, where a martyr was killed. One of us was killed and they detained 10 of us."
The assault follows four days of clashes between protesters and state security that broke out just after the second stage of a six-week election for Egypt's new parliament.
At least 10 protesters have been killed and hundreds wounded in this fresh wave of violence, in which troops have been caught on camera beating people even once they have fallen to the ground.
The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he was "highly alarmed by the excessive use of force."
