Cairo calm after overnight clashes

Ramses bore witness to angry scenes on Monday night, as supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohammed Mursi attempted to close the intersection.

Egyptian police intervened after scuffles broke out, with locals angered by Mursi supporters trying to block major roads crossing the River Nile.

Things quickly turned violent, with Mursi supporters trading missiles with police.

State media reported at least 22 people injured in the first major outbreak of violence in a week.

At least 92 people were killed in the days after Mursi was toppled, in a military coup, more than half of them shot by troops outside a barracks where the deposed leader is believed to be held.
