By-elections run up

After months of campaigning, on Sunday national elections will be held for the third time in just 50 years as the country appears to be transitioning out of a military dictatorship.

Polls were held in 2010 that ushered former generals into the parliament, while the major opposition party, the National League for Democracy boycotted the election.

However, this election, opposition leader and icon Aung San Suu Kyi and fellow NLD candidates will be vying for the vacant seats in the legislator.

Suu Kyi and fellow candidates have been campaigning across the country to overflowing crowds in a effort to shore up support before polls open tomorrow

However, not surprisingly, as of Saturday there have been several complaints that local officials have been tampering with ballots during the early voting period that was held from March 30 to 31st.

But, if the elections are seen as free and fair, many experts believe that western countries may began to unravel the web of sanctions that have been placed on Burma
