Description

A newly created Buddha-Vihar, a Buddhist place of worship, is located on the Nashik-Mumbai Highway

The religious Kumbh Mela (festival) is celebrated in four major pilgrim centres in the country viz. Allahabad, Nashik, Ujjain and Haridwar. It is generally acknowledged to be the most sacred of all the religious celebrations. Legend has it that the Gods stayed on Earth for a period of twelve days (equivalent to twelve Earth years) to protect the nectar from the demons. The festival is therefore celebrated every twelve years at those locations where 4 drops of the nectar fell. A dip in the Godavari River at Nashik has attained great importance as a result of the belief that it gets one rid of all sins.

The Kalaram temple, the place where Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar led his Satyagraha to gain entry into the temple, Naroshankar temple, Kapaleshwar temple, Panchavati, Ramkund and the Laxmi Narayan Temple at Tapovan are some of the holy places at Nashik. The Pandav Caves, dating back to 100 B.C are also famous.
