Brexit PM May evokes 'implementation period'

In her first prime minister’s questions since the election Theresa May says Britain could need an implementation period to smooth its exit from the EU.

But, she insisted this would not be an unlimited transition and Brexit would go ahead.

British Prime Minister Theresa May: “For very practical reasons, when we know what the future relationship with the EU will be, we may need implementation periods. We made that point in our Article 50 letter to ensure that the practical arrangements can be put in place for that new relationship. But I’m very clear, this does not mean that unlimited transitional phase. We are going to leave the European Union, that’s what people wanted, that’s what we will deliver.”

The latest comments by May over Brexit follow her recent offer to protect the rights of EU citizens living in the UK.

European officials, however, have criticised those plans, insisting they want further guarantees from the prime minister.
