En 1970, dans une petite communauté de la côte nord-ouest de l'Ecosse, Bess épouse Jan en dépit de l'opposition de son entourage. Convaincue que leur amour est béni, Bess communique avec Dieu et lui raconte cet amour fou. Jan est victime d'un accident de travail sur une plate-forme pétrolière, et il en revient paralysé. Bess tente alors tout pour l'aider à guérir...
