Bolivia march ends in clashes

Bolivian coca farmers clashed with police on Monday (January 30) at the end of a march of more than 500-kilometres to urge their government to support plans for a new road through the Amazon.
The group of around 800 protesters was joined by other supporters on their arrival in La Paz but the peaceful demonstration erupted into violence as they tried to push their way into the city's central plaza.
The demonstrators, who set off from Cochabamba, a coca-growing heartland in central Bolivia, argue that the planned new road would help business in the area and improve access to health care.
Their march mimicked a protest last year by another indigenous group from the region who want the road plan blocked because they say it would destroy their traditional way of life.
