Description

Body recomposition is currently all the rage...and for good reason - it works! For many years it was seen as gospel that it was impossible to lose body fat and gain muscle mass at the same time, but over the last decade it has - through science and personal experience of many thousands around the globe - become evident that it certainly is possible. The question is, 'How can you achieve optimal goals when trying to body recomp?'. This is a very prudent question because it is extremely easy to plateau and make zero progress at all when attempting to recomp your body. I see many people either eat too much and proceed to gain fat, or eat too little and lose too much muscle mass. There is a fine balance when recomping, but it can be achieved with relative ease provided that certain 'rules' are followed. In this piece we will look at these 'rules' and see how they will assist you in recomping successfully.

1) Progression in the gym: I see far too many people ease off on training when they're in a recomp or cutting phase. This is a big mistake to make. You must train with equal intensity all year round (regardless of your goals) if you want to achieve them. You cannot expect to build muscle and lose fat if you don't train your backside off!

2) Eating protein: We all know that eating lots of protein is required to build muscle, but during a recomp you'll need to eat even more protein to ensure that catabolism doesn't kick in (which is likely as you'll be in a calorie deficit several days per week). You can offset this and preserve your muscle mass by eating more protein. Aim for 1 to 1.2g of protein per lb of bodyweight.
