In the mid-1980s Bob Forrest was in New York City and he heard about some friends who died from heroin. Back then it was called China White and it came in little plastic or wax paper packets that were stamped to say what type of dope it was.



It might have Marlon Brando from The Godfather, or a merry go round, or Cher's picture on it. After 911, some had a picture of the World Trade Center on it with a plane crashing into it.



This was part of the underground, gross, dry, black humor world of drug dealing in New York City. So we were trying to find out where they got that dope and what was on the packages so we could find it and do just a little bit less so we wouldn't die.



That's what's happening in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, New Hampshire, and Vermont where we're hearing about a high death rate today. Drug addicts don't know people are dying from this stuff - we just think we're going to do it smarter, different, and better.


Bob goes on to talk about hitting a low point where everything was bad until he bought a bag of dope and then everything was great again. He never felt that counselors on the rehab side understood the pull the drug experience has on people who are addicted.


Now he is a co-founder of Oro House Recovery Centers.
