Blues is C – Captain John Handy 1965
Captain John Handy ( 1900-1970) is one of the most exciting and important musicians playing in the New Orleans idiom and yet he is almost totally unrecognized. One of the reasons is that there is an old die-hard idea that the saxophone has no place in a New Orleans Jazz Band and other is that he has made such few recordings. He lived all his life in New Orleans.
The band consists of four musicians from the early New Orleans tradition. Next To Capt. John Handy on alt sax there are Kid Thomas Valentine trumpet, Jim Robinson trombone and Sammy Penn drums.
From the young generation are British born Sammy Rimmington on clarinet together with the young Americans Bill Sinclair piano, Dick Griffith banjo, and Dick McCarthy bass.
In 1965 these jazz musicians from invited to perform at a jazz club in Connecticut. The clubmembers found the wisdom to record this both on audio as well as on video.
