BJP's volte-face on China war report

Completely reversing his pre-poll position, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday said the classified Henderson-Brooks report on the India-China war of 1962 could not be released in the "national interest".

"This is a top secret document and has not been declassified so far. Further, release of this report, fully or partially or disclosure of any information related to this report would not be in national interest," Jaitley said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. Less than four months ago, Jaitley, as the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, argued in favour of releasing the secret report in the public domain.

"With the wisdom of hindsight I am of the opinion that the report's contents could have been made public some decades ago," Jaitley wrote in a signed article, which was posted on the BJP website on March 19, less than a month before the general election.
