What makes a man the poet asked
In words of eloquence
Answers sought I delve within
Through gifted common sense
It isn’t good to question so
That buried deep to hide
Nothing good would surface from
This shell of stubborn pride
Two full pints of bitterness
A salt shake of deceit
A full cup of careless words
Two pounds of self defeat
A masquerade of sunny smiles
Half a foolish heart
Two twinkling eyes, a gentle soul
A bulls eye with three darts
One penny for the ferryman
Paid up in advance
A bucket load of tears for me
Unused tickets for the dance
A cinema of dreams mislaid
A brewery of regrets
One troubled mind in whirlpool guise
A book of lost sure bets
A cloud of if’s, a sky of grey
An ocean deep and blue
One happy childhood in fields and streams
Throw in a bruise or two
A mothers love a fathers pride
Scars from love and life
The merest hint of spice
A slice of humble pie
Bind it all with good intent
Dust it sugar sweet
Bake for 50 yrs or more
Decorate with tired feet
