Benghazi ceremony honours fighters
Description
Thousands of militants who fought in units loyal to Libya's new rulers are honoured in a ceremony in Benghazi for their contribution to the fight against Muammar Gaddafi's regime.
At this army ceremony in the eastern Libyan city, spectators cheer as each fighter receives a certificate from the interim government's defence minister.
He urged young men to sign up for the new army and other security bodies.
(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) LIBYAN INTERIM GOVERNMENT'S MINISTER OF DEFENCE, JALAL AL-DEGHIDI, SAYING:
"Now the revolutionaries can join the army and the police academies. Or if they wish to join the civil guard that will also be established. We are calling on all the youths to join us."
Libya's National Transitional Council may have a hard time persuading fighters to join a new army, as many have expressed the desire to give up arms after Gaddafi's death.
One group at the ceremony can be seen holding a poster that reads "Today, we will put down our guns to raise the pen".
The NTC has said officers in military units would automatically be enlisted in the army.
It has also scheduled a campaign to unify all battalions and brigades under the umbrella of the Ministry of Defence in a bid to rebuild the disbanded army.
