Ben Paynter - a statue's dream

I walked a street I’d walked before
a road that led to home
and watched a lonesome bystander
who’s face was hard as stone
impassively he gazed at me
and I stared back at him
and saw the answers dancing there
along with aging sin
I asked him, “Please where have you gone,
you have what I have not.
your eyes they sing a dreamers song
of answers I have sought”
he looked at me with hardened eyes
and spoke, but not to me
but muttered to the passing wind
of a place where he’d been free

now even when I too have aged
and cracks begin to show
as mindless rain gently erodes
I will withdraw below
to find this place where silence lies
and dreams are dreamt in vain
where knowledge makes no difference
and nonsense is a game
this place is not so far from here
not so distant after all
just past this moments fleeting thought
behind a hidden wall
where women dance and men they sing
about the days of old
where jokers jested laughing kings
and smiles weren’t so cold
