BEN DISASTER - I WOULDN'T
PRESENTED BY CHERYL WIWAT
Ben Disasters music has transformed over time through members and sounds. Adapting to venues and settings needs. After years of transforming and growing Ben Disaster has reformed as a powerful four piece for the full band experience. The striped down music brings a captivating energy of music and feeling. Combining loud aggressive pop music with a brand of East coast rock and uk power pop.
Ben Disaster's solo project started as a creative outlet for trying times (and gave him some good material to go busking with), and he began taking gigs in 2007 as a side project to fronting punk band Let's Dance. In 2009, his solo work became his primary focus. In 2010, Ben recorded his full-length debut, "Lloyd Tillman Is..." with Nik Kozub (Shout Out Out Out Out) and toured Western Canada with Vancouver's Dylan Thomas. 2011 saw the release of the "One Fist Pounding Against The Stage" 7" and a pair of music videos, one for "One Fist" and the other for its b-side "Not Running."
His live sets range from raucous rock 'n' roll to earthy, honest folk tunes to experiments with noise via shortwave radios, cassette tapes and reel-to-reel players.
Only a landed Albertan, Ben grew up in New Brunswick and still keeps a jar of seawater on his bookshelf to remind him of home. He remembers big family get-togethers that would always degenerate into wild group singalongs, his uncle strumming the guitar, his mom singing, his grandfather always smiling, someone playing the spoons. After moving to Alberta as a kid, Ben dove into the punk scene while barely a teenager, fronting his first band and playing live regularly while still in the seventh grade. By age 16 Ben had formed Dance Floor Disasters (source of his pseudonym) and released his first single on Longshot Records. His next project, Let's Dance, released three 7"s and one full-length album. In addition, Ben has seen much of North America as roadie for Edmonton's Wednesday Night Heroes and fill-in guitarist for Boston punk group A Global Threat.
Ben's voice, honed by years of trying to be heard while busking over the wild night crowds on Edmonton's Whyte Avenue, is unnervingly powerful. His stage presence, aided by past dabbling in theatre and improv, is endearing and often draw laughs, and he's been known to mix things up on stage, occasionally donning a Christmas-light suit, bringing along his own footswitch-operated DIY stage lighting and slideshows, or duetting with an old Radio Shack Globe Patrol shortwave radio.
