Becoming a Gunsmith
37 Views • Oct 23, 2013
Description
Becoming a gunsmith takes time, persistence and a passion for firearms. Because there are many ways to acquire proper training, it's up to the individual to decide how to become a gunsmith in a way that works best for him or her.
If you have time but don't have money to put towards a formal education, an apprenticeship might be a good fit for you. Apprenticing with a local gunsmith will offer you true, hands-on training in the most practical way available. However, apprenticeships are often hard to come by and most of the time, pay little or nothing while you're learning.
Gunsmithing classes offer a more formal education option. There are two main ways to attend gunsmith classes: on-site or via distance learning.
On-site programs offer hands-on training but do not accommodate your schedule and may not even be offered in your location.
Distance learning programs offer the convenience of home study but don't include time in a lab environment. Most distance gunsmithing programs do require or encourage students to practice skills in labs as well as at home on their own.
Once you're trained, an FFL, or Federal Firearms License, will secure your ability to buy, sell and manufacture firearms. Keep in mind that it's also important to learn about and abide by your state-specific firearms regulations.
