A lot of beginners have problems learning to control and define their top rock steps. And this discourages them, thinking they cannot dance. But that's something that you can overcome with some consistent effort!

To make sure that you gain control AND definition over your top rock, this is one simple method that you can practice in any space.

The 9 Square Technique is based on what I've watched people do when they play the Dance Dance Revolution machine. In Dance Dance Revolution, people take turns to hit arrows from up, down, left and right (while following the screen) in order to win the game.

To use the 9-Square Technique well, you can either imagine yourself in a square or literally use tape to draw a square on the floor.

To improve your top rocks, just imagine yourself stepping in any of the 9 squares.
