Baraan: A Javanese tradition
33 Views • Jul 05, 2017
Description
Observed primarily in the southern state, Baraan is a Javanese tradition that means to visit your neighbours’ houses in a group. In Kampung Parit Begelan, villagers will send about three representatives from each household to join the Baraan group that will pay a visit to the houses in their community.
At each home, the Baraan group will greet the host, pray, recite “selawat” (praises to Prophet Muhammad) and receive donations. The host will also serve food and drink to the group.
“This tradition brings the community closer together,” village chief, Hj Shaifudin Kadak, told The Malaysian Insight.
“Our children overseas who come home for Hari Raya Aidilfitri and join the Baraan group will also get to reconnect with relatives and friends,” he added.
While the Baraan tradition remains a major part of Johor’s culture, it’s not uncommon to hear it being practised in other states as it has spread to other communities.
