Hi this is Dana Ranahan from Body Works Sports Physiotherapy in North Vancouver and today I wanted to show you a little progression on a balance exercise that we did last week. Ultimately better balance transfers to less risk of fall, less risk of injury with sport and better performance because it means that you’re able to transfer loads better. So last time, we looked at doing a tandem stance balance exercise where we put one foot in front of the other and work to try to balance ourselves. The next thing we can do to challenge that is to close our eyes. So if we close eyes suddenly we start to feel a little bit more wobbly. It now requires our inner ear and all our joints and muscles receptors to react more so and we don’t rely on our vision so much. Now the other thing that you could do is grab something to work with and with that as you take your tandem stance, grab a little ball and work on some movement. So it could a smaller ball or soccer ball, anything, and the more that you’re moving around, the more your body has to react and you could then even do this with your eyes closed, so eyes closed working to try to maintain balance and moving the balance around. Now usually when we do this, we do this for 30 seconds or so at a time, take a little break and go again and after you practise balance it should get better, over time it should become easier. So practise your balance. See how you do, hopefully it improves your performance. If you have more questions or need help, check us out online at www.body-works.ca and have a great day.
