Description

Police in Bahrain use tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters in the old market area of Manama.

Around 10 people were arrested for their part in the anti-government demonstration, which Bahrain's Sunni Muslim rulers say was unauthorised.

Bahrain, home to a major U.S. naval base, has been volatile since members of the Shi'ite majority called for reform last year.

The ruling party managed to stop the months of major protests using martial law and help from Gulf neighbors.

A commission of international legal experts reported last November that torture had been systematically used on protesters to punish and extract hundreds of confessions.

Shi'ites say they are still discriminated against when it comes to elections, jobs, housing and education, which is fueling further unrest.
