1 Atharva Veda is the name of the fourth Veda that was a late addition to the Vedic scriptures of Hinduism.

2 Composed in Vedic Sanskrit, Atharva Veda is a collection of 730 hymns with about 6,000 mantras which are divided into 20 Kandas. Each of the kanda is actually sub-divided into ‘suktas’ and these suktas, into mantras.

3 It is called by several other names that include, Atharvangi-Rasa, Angirasa, Kshattraveda and so on.

4 It is also named after its great author called Rishi Atharvan who was the son of Vasistha.

5 It is said that Rishi Atharvan was an ancient sage who ‘brought down fire from heaven’ and introduced us to sacrificial fire-rituals.

6 Because of its special features, Atharva Veda stands a little apart from the other three Vedas, especially the Rigveda.

7 A major portion of Atharvaveda covers eight major topics, namely Bhaisajya Suktas, Ayusya Suktas, Paustika Suktas, Abhicarika Suktas, Prayascitta Suktas, Rajakarma Suktas and Brahmanya.

8 These topics are concerned about the cure of different diseases, earning longevity, worldly progress, information about the kshatra, statecraft, purification and penances, different rites for fulfilling the desires and nature of the Brahmana.
