Astore To Rama Meadows

Rama Lake is located at an altitude of 3800 meters. Located above Rama Meadows in Astore distric of Gilgit Baltistan; this lake is a panaroma of gigantic Nanga Parbat with dark green water. Color of the lake changes dramatically with sunlight turning greenish blue from dark green. With a backdrop of southern ridge of Nanga Parbat Rama Lake water is warm enough to even swim in summers. In winters this lake remains frozen from December to March.
Lake Rama is near Chongrah village above Rama Meadows. On KKH after passing the exit for Fairy Meadows keep driving for about another 20 minutes. For Astore turn right, keep going for another 2–3 hours for town of Astore. Road till Rama Meadows is paved and tourists can reach there without undue difficulty. From Rama Meadows its a jeep journey of one hour. Remains accessible throught summers. In winters December-Jan one has to hike from the meadows for witnessing the frozen lake.

Astore Valley (Urdu: وادی استور‎) (el. 2,600 m (8,500 ft)) is located in Astore District in the Pakistani region of Gilgit-Baltistan. The valley, adjoining the eastern side of mountain Nanga Parbat, is about 120 km (75 mi) long, having area of 5,092 km2 (1,966 sq mi).[citation needed]

The entrance of the valley is located about 60 km southeast of Gilgit with four side-valleys. The valley has more than 100 villages with a total population of 71,666 (Census 1998)[citation needed], including Gudai, Shekong, Dass Kariam, Loas, Louze, Chilm, Bubin, Gorikot, Parisheng Eid Ghah, Fina, Bulen, Chongra, Tari Shing, Rattu, Kamri, and Minimerg. Rama lake and pastures are the most famous tourist attraction in the region. The majority of people practice subsistence agriculture and livestock is the main source of livelihood complemented by seasonal work in down districts of the country. Due to its diverse landscape and climatic conditions the valley provides excellent habitat for a variety of commercially important medicinal plants.
