Asia marks tsunami 10 years on

Indonesia was hit the hardest by the Indian Ocean tsunami ten years ago.

This was their way of commemorating the 160, 000 or more who died in Aceh Province alone.

These were the scenes in the immediate aftermath when the massive wave struck.

The death toll rose day by day as bodies littered the streets and others were washed ashore.

Vice-President Jusuf Kalla said Friday's ceremony was as much about the future as the past.

"This commemoration ceremony is not only to pray for the victims and thank the people around the world but it is a time when we learn how to resolve the problem, as the lesson (from the tsunami) taught us how to resolve a complicated problem by uniting as one."

The tsunami killed some 226, 000 people in 13 countries across Asia.
