Ash Cloud Rises from Kilauea's Summit

Ash continued to rise from Kilauea’s summit on Thursday, May 24, and light ash was falling downwind. Earthquakes also continue at a moderate rate, according to the US Geographical Survey.

“The earthquakes and ash explosions are occurring as the summit area subsides and adjusts to the withdrawal of magma from the summit,” USGS said. “Additional explosive events that could produce minor amounts of ashfall downwind are possible at any time. Volcanic gas emissions at the summit remain high.”

Eruptions of lava continue in the lower east rift zone in Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens with the middle fissures producing the most activity.
