Description

Libyan officials arrest gunmen suspected of being involved in the violence that shook Libya over the last week.

Following two days of deadly clashes between tribal factions in the city of Zlitan, an Islamist group used bombs and bulldozers on Friday to destroy the tomb of 15th century Sufi scholar Abdel Salam al-Asmar.

The attackers reduced the revered tomb to rubble and also set fire to a historic library in a nearby mosque, ruining thousands of books.

Initially, officials reported that the fighting was sparked by a dispute between two families.

They later said gunmen involved confessed to being a group of runaway Muammar Gaddafi loyalists who came back to stir trouble in the region.

One military official said the hundreds of people involved in the incidents had caught authorities by surprise

Officers also confiscated a large cache of weapons found in homes.
