Aosta

La città di Aosta si trova all'incirca nel mezzo della Regione Autonoma Valle d'Aosta, nella piana in cui scorre il fiume principale della regione: la Dora Baltea. Su Aosta dominano importanti montagne tra le quali la Becca di Nona, il Monte Emilius, Punta Chaligne e la Becca di Viou. La città è attraversata da Nord a Sud, all'altezza dell'Arco d'Augusto, dal fiume Buthier, uno dei numerosi affluenti della Dora Baltea Considerando i capoluoghi di provincia, è il quarto più alto d'Italia, dopo Campobasso e prima di Caltanissetta[5]. Aosta si trova in un fondovalle interamente circondato da alte montagne, perciò è soggetta ad un microclima particolare con spiccate caratteristiche di continentalità. In generale le stagioni intermedie sono più brevi che nel resto del Nord Italia, mentre sia l'estate (nonostante l'altitudine) che l'inverno sono precoci: risultano tutt'altro che rari brevi periodi di caldo torrido a fine maggio e forti gelate a novembre.

In general, the seasons are shorter than in the rest of Northern Italy, while both the summer (despite the altitude) and early winter are: are far from rare short periods of hot weather in late May and severe frosts in November.

Summers are moderately warm and sunny, but more ventilated than in the rest of Northern Italy (thanks to the mountain breezes) and subject to thunderstorms, especially in August: the average warmest month (July) is 21.25 degrees. Winters are generally cold (January average of 0.65 degrees) but quite variable depending on the year, with dry periods alternating with periods of snow and very cold. Unlike the surrounding mountains, the average annual rainfall of Aosta is quite low (in the order of 600 mm).
