Description
Let's take a closer look at the Supreme Court's ruling with the help from an expert.
For that, I'm pleased to be joined by Mr. KIM Keechang, Law professor at Korea University Law School
Professor Kim thank you for taking the time to come in today.
Thank you
1. So the top court has ordered a retrial of bribery cases of former President Park Geun-hye, her confidant Choi Soon-sil and Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong. Can you break down for us what this means and maybe the reasoning for the lastest ruling?
2. The Supreme Court has pointed out that a couple of cases which were not included as bribery charges in a previous appeals court decision should be considered as bribes.
They include three horses worth millions of dollars given by Samsung to Choi Soon-sil's daughter for her equestrian training,...as well as a seperate donation by the firm worth millions to a shady sports organization that was set up by Choi Soon-sil.
All-in-all the top court says Lee should be charged with just over 4 million dollars more worth of bribes.
What are your thoughts? And do you think Lee will be put back in jail?
Another key point was whether there are enough evidence to prove that Lee Jae-yong had asked former President Park for political favor in return for his donations. The Supreme Court ruled that issues related to Lee Jae-yong's leadership succession clearly existed at Samsung when the donations were made and so the donations should be seen as bribes. How do you see this?
3. Now to former President Park....
The Supreme Court judged that sentences of her bribery charges should be ruled separately from her other charges that include abuse of power.
What does the ruling mean for Park?
