He is hurting.
I can tell –
I can feel it
when I think of him
even from so far away,
so long since we last talked.

He feels alone.
Even though
I am right there.
With him.
All the time.
Tucked in the shadows,
just out of eyeshot,
holding his hand.

(Even now
I am there.)

He doesn't realize.
How beautiful he is.
How special he is.
How much he means to me,
and always has –
ever since he plucked me
from the depths of
my loneliness and despair
all those years ago
and took me into his life,
into his heart,
gave me a someone to call home
in this big bad city of ours.

But he is in pain!
What do I do?
How do I help him
when I am not there?
When he can't see
the tears I shed
when I feel his pain –

(Oh yes, my darling,
I can feel it.)

So I will say:

You are beautiful.
You are special.
You are sexy.
You are not fat.
You are a shining light,
a guiding force,
a wonderful friend....

And I love you!

So when you're feeling
alone
afraid
fat
worthless
strange
lost
confused......

Come to me.
I am here.
I will hold you
and pat your back
and listen
and understand

till the tears are gone
till the clouds have parted
till your appetite is sated

till you can see
