Dr. David Samadi, leading robotic prostate surgeon, comments on the high use of Ambien in America. Some studies indicate that sleep aids may not extend sleep duration more than a half hour beyond your normal sleep patterns and do not improve speed with which you fall asleep. Still, sleep aids are heavily relied upon and may be over-prescribed. Dr. Samadi suggests alternate sleep remedies such as eating foods rich in magnesium and tryptophan, both natural sleep aids. He also suggests natural hormone supplements, melatonin and lifestyle changes including avoiding exercise and electronic usage just before bed. He reminds that prescription sleep medication is intended for short-term and is designed to slow the central nervous system. Use and may involve side effects with sleepwalking or driving dangers after taking sleep aids.
